PACE NEL MONDO

La pace non inizia
dove finisce la guerra.
La pace inizia dentro l’uomo,
in quel luogo invisibile
dove nasce un pensiero
prima che diventi una parola,
e una parola
prima che diventi una ferita.

Per secoli, l’uomo ha
cercato un nemico al di fuori di sé,
e non si è accorto
che la guerra più grande
si combatte nel suo stesso cuore.

Ha eretto confini tra i popoli,
e poi li ha chiamati stati.

Ha eretto muri,
e poi li ha chiamati sicurezza.

Ha alzato la voce contro un altro,
e poi ha chiamato il suo odio verità.

Ma nessuna bandiera
può essere più grande di un uomo.

E nessuna idea
deve essere più preziosa
di una vita umana.

Cosa abbiamo guadagnato
se abbiamo perso la capacità
di salvarci a vicenda?

Cosa significa essere potenti
se abbiamo bisogno
che qualcun altro sia debole
per sentire la nostra grandezza?

Forse la forza più grande risiede proprio nella mano che può ferire eppure sceglie di perdonare.

Forse la vittoria più grande è perdonare quando la vendetta sarebbe più facile.

Perché un uomo non diventa grande quando sconfigge un altro uomo.

Diventa grande quando sconfigge l’oscurità che dentro di lui lo convince a non considerare un altro uomo come tale.

Ecco perché non cerchiamo la pace solo tra le nazioni.

La cerchiamo dentro di noi.

Perché il mondo non migliorerà quando tutti saranno d’accordo.

Migliorerà quando un uomo comprenderà che essere diverso non è meno prezioso.

E forse allora, per la prima volta, la storia smetterà di chiedersi:

Chi ha vinto?

E inizierà a chiedersi:

Chi ha salvato l’umanità?

MIR U SVETU

Mir ne počinje
tamo gde prestaje rat.
Mir počinje u čoveku —
u onom nevidljivom mestu
gde se rađa misao
pre nego što postane reč,
i reč
pre nego što postane rana.

Čovek je vekovima
tražio neprijatelja izvan sebe,
a nije primetio
da najveći rat
nosi u sopstvenom srcu.

Podizao je granice između ljudi,
a zatim ih nazvao državama.
Podizao je zidove,
a zatim ih nazvao sigurnošću.
Podizao je glas protiv drugoga,
a zatim svoju mržnju
nazvao istinom.

Ali nijedna zastava
ne može biti veća od čoveka.

I nijedna ideja
ne sme biti vrednija
od jednog ljudskog života.

Šta smo osvojili
ako smo izgubili sposobnost
da sačuvamo jedni druge?

Šta znači biti moćan
ako nam je potrebno
da neko drugi bude slab
da bismo osetili sopstvenu veličinu?

Možda je najveća snaga
upravo u ruci
koja može da povredi,
a ipak bira da pomiluje.

Možda je najveća pobeda
oprostiti onda
kada bi osveta bila lakša.

Jer čovek ne postaje velik
kada pobedi drugog čoveka.

Postaje velik
kada pobedi ono mračno
što ga iznutra nagovara
da drugoga ne smatra čovekom.

Zato ne tražimo mir
samo među narodima.

Tražimo ga
u sebi.

Jer svet neće postati bolji
kada se svi ljudi slože.

Postaće bolji
kada čovek shvati
da drugačiji
nije manje vredan.

I možda će tada
istorija prvi put
prestati da pita:

Ko je pobedio?

I početi da pita:

Ko je sačuvao čoveka?

PEACE IN THE WORLD

Peace does not begin
where war comes to an end.
Peace begins within the human being —
in that invisible place
where a thought is born
before it becomes a word,
and a word
before it becomes a wound.

For centuries, humanity
has searched for an enemy beyond itself,
never noticing
that the greatest war
is carried within the human heart.

We built borders between people,
then called them nations.
We built walls,
then called them security.
We raised our voices against one another,
then called our hatred
the truth.

But no flag
can ever be greater than a human being.

And no idea
should ever be worth more
than a human life.

What have we conquered
if we have lost the ability
to protect one another?

What does it mean to be powerful
if we need someone else to be weak
in order to feel our own greatness?

Perhaps the greatest strength
lives in the hand
that has the power to wound —
yet chooses to caress.

Perhaps the greatest victory
is to forgive
when revenge would be easier.

For a human being does not become great
by defeating another human being.

We become great
when we defeat the darkness
that whispers within us
that another human being
is less human than we are.

So let us not seek peace
only among nations.

Let us seek it
within ourselves.

For the world will not become better
when all people agree.

It will become better
when humanity understands
that being different
does not make anyone less worthy.

And perhaps, then,
for the first time,
history will cease to ask:

Who won?

And begin to ask:

Who saved the human being?
